It's actually quite striking how his returns improved from the new manager's first game v Hibs on 21/10/24.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/cyriel-dessers/leistungsdaten/spieler/317806

Before that his goals/assists return is sparce. After that it's the opposite.

But aye, his improvement has been the last few games.

10 goals or assists in the 12 league games since Clement started mid October.

Yip, 7 goals and 3 assists in 12. Plus the Betis goal. 9 and 4 in 18 if you include Europe and Cup games.

Before that 4 goals and 3 assists in 15 games.

Iam not suggesting for one moment that there is any comparison in quality between Dessers and Big Mark Hateley.

The only comparison that I would like to mention is that both had very sticky starts to their Ibrox careers.

Hateley was getting it tight up until that fateful day in May 1991 when he won us the championship at home to Aberdeen.

The rest is history.

We're not creating very many chances. That's partly down to Dessers poor hold up play, and his lack of good movement. So there's a lot of improvement still needed.

The game yesterday, did you watch Scott Wright and Sterland.  It was fuck-all to do with Dessers that we were pish.

His movement is his best asset.

Not really.

167 Dessers

122 Roofe

115 Kyogo

153 Morelos

100 Defoe

100 Giakomakis

122 Colak

115 Boyd

122 Dembele

137 Edouard

If he continues to improve and perform like he has of late then that’s the standard required. But no idea why folk are saying we should be praising his goals over his time here.  We’re not top of the league because we haven’t scored enough goals. Part of that has been Dessers performances before Xmas. A lot is also due to not having a good RW and enough goals from midfield.

The rest of your post is trivially obvious. But not really sure how it’s pro or anti Dessers. He’s scored some important goals and also missed a lot of important chances.

It’s not pro or anti Dessers. Simply stating his goal scoring ratio doesn’t rule us out of winning the league ergo.

Would be great if he upped his averages but it’s unlikely to be the defining reason if we don’t win the league. Unless of course he spunks guilt edged chances in every old firm game.

You paid proper attention to his movement during games?

If so, you’ll notice he is forever pointing to where he wants the ball and seldom gets it.

Plus, he pops up everywhere along the defensive line so he’s hardly static or immobile. Slightly slower than we are used to perhaps but mobile nonetheless.

Also, almost every goal he has scored has been from a through ball/pass or he’s won his 50/50 and ran in on goal. He seldom makes much from balls swung in from the wings so he’s either not very good dealing with cross balls or the cross balls aren’t any good, or (more than likely) both.

Perhaps we need to reduce our reliance on full backs crossing (no ‘perhaps’, we do) and start playing the ball to where our only fit striker wants it.

Can you imagine the amount of grief Hateley would have got on here had the internet existed back then. 😳

I guess this is where we disagree. We’ve conceded 4 less but scored 9 less.

The attack is the main reason we aren’t ahead imo. And Desser’s form at least early on is a big part of that.

The difference between scoring every 120 vs 165 minutes is massive.

Most fans would agree if we could upgrade 2 positions it would be RW and striker.

If he keeps scoring at a higher rate then he might solve the striker problem. If his form dips back then it will be a struggle for us as we simply won’t score enough to avoid dropping points.

"Forever pointing" isn't how you make it easy for players to find you with a pass. It's clever movement. To me, he's too easily marked.

Wind yer neck in. Other players having poor games yesterday has f all to do with whether or not Dessers has been playing well - which is what the thread is about.

Now go and learn how to spell our players names.

He’s running into the space where he’s pointing.
Might not be ‘clever movement’ and maybe he can be easily marked but if they don’t give him the ball where and when we wants it’s quite hard to make judgement.

So nowt to do with shite defending and the first 20% of the season being managed by a complete fuckwit?

The main reason is Dessers not being in decent goal scoring form right from the off?

He's not "running into space" enough though, that's the whole point. His runs are too predictable, and not sharp enough. On the plus side, he's looking confident when he does get a chance now, and he's taking them well. With the coaching staffs help, i'm sure there's more to come from him.

One thing we learned yesterday Sterling is not a left winger but that's not his fault probably never played there in his life.

As someone else said he picked a team for the conditions yesterday not the most pleasing team on the eye

Yes I’d say our attacking output was the main reason (within the playing personnel). Stating the obvious to say the manager was shite! Not to say we can’t be better in every other area.

But not having a clinical striker has cost us points.

Hardly a controversial point. He’s been slated by the majority of fans for his sub par performances.

Under PC he’s been much improved and he’s scoring at a more regular/acceptable rate.

But wouldn’t surprise me if we try and strengthen that area before the window ends. As (most recognise) it’s been a big weakness. Alongside RW

Dessers has always made plenty of runs into the spaces and he’s obviously not too predictable for defenders otherwise he wouldn’t have missed so many great opportunities ( often crucial )

Ironically he wouldn’t have got such a hard time if timing of his runs wasn’t so good.

Prior to his current goal run he got a hard time for his general poor play, and how lethargic he was, not just his poor finishing. I was watching Newport v Man Utd today, and the Newport striker got across the front of the defender to turn a low cross from the left into the net. It's exactly the sort of sharp darting run that Dessers should be making, but he doesn't. I appreciate you think he does, so we'll agree to disagree.
