A Raith Rovers match day reporter has resigned after posting an offensive Twitter comment about Rangers legend Sandy Jardine.

Volunteer reporter Martin Hart, from Stirling, posted the comment “And there was me thinking Sandy Jardine didn’t do walking away”, via his personal account after learning of Jardine’s death.

The club was alerted to the post after scores of Twitter users complained over its insensitive and offensive content.

Jardine had been battling bravely against cancer for the past 18 months and sadly passed away aged 65 on Thursday.

The player, who won 38 caps for Scotland, made more than 600 appearances for Rangers, scoring 77 goals in the process.

In a statement on the official club Twitter account, Raith Rovers said: “Late last night, the club was made aware of an offensive and insensitive tweet, in connection with the sad news of the death of Sandy Jardine, that had been made by one of our volunteer match day reporters on his personal Twitter account.

“The reporter has this morning apologised unreservedly for his actions and has stepped down from his position with immediate effect. Raith Rovers FC is very sorry for the offence that has been caused to the Jardine family, Rangers FC and its supporters.”
