Celtic’s retail revenues dwarf those of Rangers and will continue to remain so while the relationship with Sports Direct remains mired in controversy and courtroom showdowns.

King said: “The resources Celtic have at this point in time are clearly very, very substantial relative to ours in terms of the footballing side. They have resources to compete in Europe, that is really what they are there to do.

“Retail revenue is a huge thing, but we have budgeted for it. We have invested substantially in the squad this year and it is all based on the fact we will make nothing out of the retail business. Anything we get is the bonus.

“I don’t think we necessarily need that retail revenue to compete with Celtic. A lot depends on how Celtic spend the money. In some ways, Celtic’s position might be more awkward than ours in the sense that they have got a large expenditure and they are going to have to figure how to recycle that.

“The focus for us really is about getting back to competing with Celtic year on year, not just season on season, and on getting back into Europe.

“I want to see us competitive in Europe. Celtic haven’t been competitive in Europe even with the budget they’ve got. I don’t think it’s just about money, it’s about how well you spend the money.

“We are not competing in Europe this season, so our standard this year is that we expect to compete with Celtic. Last season, I said the non-negotiable was winning the Championship.

“I would say this year, we should at least come second.

Rangers chairman Dave King brands Mike Ashley a quitter who couldn't handle the heat

THE Ibrox chairman revealed Ashley has disappeared from the scene after a series of high profile run-ins and defeats.

DAVE KING has branded Mike Ashley a quitter who couldn’t stand the heat of handling Rangers.

The Ibrox chairman revealed Ashley has disappeared from the scene after a series of high profile run-ins and defeats against King in British courtooms.

The Johannesburg-based tycoon says his club are now considering going it alone - reluctantly - if they can’t strike a new deal with Puma to manufacture their replica kit.

King arrived in Glasgow on Saturday morning to unfurl the Championship flag before his side kicked off the new season with a 1-1 draw against Hamilton Accies .

He is adamant the club’s legal position in their controversial retail agreement with Sports Direct has never looked stronger.

He is more confident than ever before of securing a deal that enriches Rangers , rather than the billionaire retailer who reportedly gives just four pence in every pound spent back to the club.

King said: “Mike Ashley went off the (Rangers Retail) board so he kind of cut and ran, I suppose, when the going got tough. He’s disappeared, we don’t deal with Mike Ashley at all.

“He went on the retail board to try and impose himself on Rangers. He failed miserably and he has cut and run. I guess he has bigger problems in life right now than worrying about the retail relationships with Rangers.

“It’s emotionally easier to deal with others because of the nature of the individual. But, commercially, we have proceeded on a basis we felt was commercially robust.

“We have been consistent. I have given same message repeatedly and we have continued on that path.

“Mike Ashley being in there or not in there is more about the energy he brings to it. Perhaps that negative energy not being there makes it easier, but his other guys are also tough as well.”

Rangers announced in May they were ripping up the contract allowing Rangers Retail, a jointly owned company with Sports Direct, to sell shirts and other official merchandise.

Rangers withdrew its trademarks from Rangers Retail, but were stunned last week when Puma - who have close links to Ashley - pushed ahead with a kit launch, to the disgust of fans.

King said: “We are in a situation where we have made a lot of progress on the legal and commercial front in terms of our dealings with Sports Direct.

“I would say our position now in terms of what I would call the control and ability to influence the outcome of the commercial situations is far advanced relative to what it was three months ago.

“I am feeling very confident about where we are relative to Sports Direct.

Rangers could bin strip and release new one DURING this season as row with Puma and Sports Direct rumbles on

“The complication we have, of course, is Puma. Puma are in the middle of this through no fault of their own. We are trying to get a balance right where we go beyond the mere legal dispute.

“Puma could be drawn into legal dispute with the club but that wouldn’t be fair on Puma. The dispute really belongs between ourselves and Sports Direct. We want to find a way forward over the next couple of weeks that possibly accommodates Puma.

“But if we can’t do that then we will proceed on our own.”

However, King explained he is reluctant to approach an alternative kit supplier, even though he feels the law is on the side of his club.

Asked if fans should buy kit, King added: “It is a decision supporters will have to make themselves.

“It would be very difficult for the club, practically, to go ahead with an alternative to Puma.

“It would be very, very difficult for us to go to another equivalent of Puma and ask them to come into the middle of this current dispute.

“Commercially it would be awkward even though, legally, I think we’d be entitled to do that.

“There might be another alternative, where we just perhaps launch our own kit - if we can’t get a way forward with Puma, which is clearly our preference.

“However, Puma really shouldn’t be in the position they find themselves in and we recognise that. We would like to do our best to mitigate their position.”

King admits his club are struggling to play financial catch-up with Celtic, who have just signed Scott Sinclair in a deal worth £4.5 million and are within 180 minutes of banking a Champions League windfall of around £20 million.

Celtic’s retail revenues dwarf those of Rangers and will continue to remain so while the relationship with Sports Direct remains mired in controversy and courtroom showdowns.

If accepting second best is common in the boardroom where does that end in the club?  Does warburton and the players now think getting away with second best is acceptable if our own fucking chairman thinks it's acceptable.

Absolute shocker of a comment.

I wish we would not answer these questions. Is fuckin Brenda across the toon answering them? no.

If you have to answer it, you say "as high as possible", or "one game at a time" - the usual presser soundbites -  and leave it at that. Putting a position on it is fucking ridiculous. Theres plenty of seasons we have came 2nd in the league  - thats the way competitions work - however we have never given a position to attain at the start of the season.

Every time DK opens his mouth he just spoutes more shite.

This guy isn't interested in us at all. How can he say he has substantially funded our squad? We have paid some money for some players but the amount of STs we have sold should've seen a good bit more spent. He has made and is making a total cunt of our supporters with these pishy statements. The sooner folk wake up to this eejit the better. We need someone who has Rangers best interests at heart and not their own.

Hate to say it but for the first and last  time in my 30 years supporting the Gers I would be relatively happy with second. When I think back to where we were only 2 years ago it's astonishing where we are now. It's going to take time, we have no retail revenue, no European money,  no money from player sales. Our only income is season ticket money. It will be the first time the vast majority of our squad will have been involved in a top league title race.

I'll be expecting to win the league next season but the players,  management etc deserve a bit of room to breath this year.

At its height we earned around £3 million a season from retail, didn't we earn around£1 million in the last accounts?

If that's correct how is £2 million pound a year going to elevate us from grubbing around the market we are currently in to start buying proper players?

You can bet your boots that Joey Barton and Jordan Rossiter weren't lured here with this pish anyway. Champion's League football is where our club should be. In fact did big Dave no say that we would share titles with celt*c year after year?

He just wades into shit each time he opens his mouth. I mind him saying he wanted to merge oldco and newco so celt*c fans couldnt slag us.

I think everyone is totally overreacting and mis-interpreting what he said here. He is letting it be known that anything less than second should and won't be tolerated. He says we aim to compete with Celtic for the league. He does not say second is good.

He does not say this year is non-negotiable to win the league because while he may be expect to win or at least try to win, that would be unfair on Warburton considering the budget and players he can target at the moment is not what it used to be.

King is literally the King of bullshit and bluster.

He has a mouth that keeps on spluttering nonsense that his wallet will never be able to back up.

See if he just told the truth instead of trying to butter the fans up with his big investment shite he wouldn't look like a fanny when we look like penny pinchers.

2 million less retail considering where we've been in the dregs of Scottish football and our product/brand with clowns like McCoist in charge compared to peak deals with Nike in Champions Leagues, last 16's, UEFA Cup finals, SPL title wins, Gascoigne's, Laudrups etc ... 2 million less in relative terms isn't all that bad if we are honest with ourselfs.

Which is all good and well. Why say it publicly though? That's a conversation for him and the gaffer.

The market has also shrunk since then. Kids are now following the EPL, La Liga, CL and that's the gear they want to be seen in.

Anything less than first isn't accepted. Are we really going to accept 2nd behind them? They are pish and we are accepting second, I didn't hear this when I was getting badgered to renew my STs
