Lazio Aim To Beat Birmingham City To Rangers Striker Kris Boyd

Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd is a surprise candidate to move to Serie A club Lazio, who aim to beat off competition from the likes of Birmingham City to sign the prolific goal scorer.

Lazio are examining the prospect of making a surprise move for Glasgow Rangers striker Kris Boyd. The Roman club, reports suggest, will make room for him by selling Stephen Makinwa and Simone Inzaghi.

The former Scotland international has been heavily linked with a move to Championship side Birmingham City, who want his goal to help push the Blues back towards the Premier League. However, these plans could be ruined by the Italian side.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport claims the Formello-based club are keen on the hit-man, who has been impressive this term. The 25-year old has struck 70 goals in 90 games for Rangers and this statistic has triggered great interest from the Biancocelesti.

However, signing the striker will not be cheap for Lazio. President Claudio Lotito is not keen on spending big amounts and even Boyd's €8 million price tag could be a problem for the Romans.

As well as this, there are a number of sides in England who are all keen on taking Boyd from Rangers. Lazio will face a tough battle with Birmingham coach Alex McLeish.

The former Scotland tactician revealed he is likely to make a late bid for the Rangers hit-man before the January transfer window closes at the end of the month. The Italians will need to move in quickly if they are to land their target.

ITALIAN giants Lazio are lining up a shock swoop for Kris Boyd.

The Serie A side want the Rangers striker to help fire them into Europe.

SunSport can reveal they nearly made a move for the 25-year old in the summer. Now they are ready to match the £4million offer which Birmingham had accepted last week.

It’s understood Boyd WOULD be willing to go to the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio general manager Igli Tare admits he is a huge admirer of the ex-Kilmarnock striker.

Tare said: “It’s true that Boyd is a very, very effective player and we are well aware of his situation in Glasgow.”

Lazio, who sit seventh in Serie A, haven’t made a bid yet as they must move on frontmen Simone Inzaghi and Stephen Makinwa first.

But the pair are in talks with Chievo and club chiefs are hopeful a deal will be struck soon.

That would free up funds to allow Lazio to meet Boyd’s £20,000-a-week wage demands.

The ex-Scotland star snubbed Alex McLeish’s Birmingham last week and now Eck is chasing Real Betis frontman Mariano Pavone.

Meanwhile Newcastle’s interest in Ibrox skipper Barry Ferguson has cooled after they made a £5m offer for Rennes midfield ace Stephane Mbia.

And Gers misfit Alan Gow will see a specialist today to discover the extent of the hip injury which KO’d his move to Wolves.

JOE JORDAN has urged Lazio target Kris Boyd to take on The Italian Job.

Jordan was the last Scottish hitman to star in Serie A.

The Tartan Army idol admits it was the BEST move of his life.

He reckons David Beckham’s high-profile switch to the San Siro shows Italy still holds massive appeal for players.

And he’s challenged £4million Rangers ace Boyd to join Becks in one of the world’s most glamorous leagues.

Jaws insisted: “Going to Italy is a great opportunity for any footballer.

“Signing for Milan was the best move of my career and the best move of my life.

“I don’t think this kind of move happens as much now as it did in my playing days.

“The financial rewards for players tend to be on these shores nowadays.

“Because of that, players have maybe lost the opportunity I had.

“But when you see Beckham moving to Italy you know the attraction is still there.

“He has made the move later than he would have wanted.

“It’s the kind of move you would like to make in your prime.

“But Becks has clearly been struck by the culture and the way of life in Italy. He will have been struck by the place and by the respect which footballers get from the people.”

At 33, the former England captain’s best days are behind him. But Boyd is just 25 and in the form of his life.

That has persuaded Lazio — seventh in Serie A but just four points behind Milan in third — to target him as a replacement for out-of-form Simone Inzaghi.

The Roman giants, who include stars like Macedonian hitman Goran Pandev in their ranks, are desperate for a return to European competition next term.

And Jordan — now a coach under Harry Redknapp at Tottenham — reckons Boyd would be a great signing.

He said: “Kris is at a good age and is not too young to move overseas.

“He has gained experience playing at a big club and also with Scotland. He can handle the move.

“It does take time to adapt to a new club, a new league and a new country.

“But Kris has his best years ahead of him and could do it.

“The move would be beneficial for him and he’d come back a better player.

“I haven’t seen too much of Kris lately but every time I do see him he’s scoring.

“He knows what he needs to do when he goes out on the pitch. He wants to get into the box and get goals.”

Jordan, 57, had a three-year stint in Italy after leaving Manchester United in the early 1980s.

He enjoyed success at the San Siro and also in a one-year spell at Hellas Verona.

He was followed to Italy by the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Paul Ince, David Platt, Des Walker and Ian Rush.

Beckham, who’s on loan from LA Galaxy, is currently the only Brit in Serie A.

But Jordan believes Boyd would cope with the challenge in Italy’s cosmopolitan capital. He said: “One big difference in Kris’ favour would be the fact that Lazio have several other foreigners.

“When I signed for AC Milan, I was the ONLY non-Italian at the club.

“That was the rule in those days and, although my team-mates were fantastic, it could have been difficult.

“I’d advise Kris just to go with the flow. As they say, when in Rome do what the Romans do.”

Jordan recalls countless tough tussles when Milan travelled to face Lazio or Roma. He reckons the fierce rivalry between the city neighbours is on a par with the Old Firm.

But he says Boyd’s experience of facing Celtic in the SPL would stand in good stead for a move.

He added: “Rome is a really fantastic city, one of my favourites. Both teams have fanatical supports.

“In that sense, there are real similarities to Glasgow.

“Roma and Lazio are big rivals and the derbies are spectacular.

“They are a very proud people when it comes to football.

“If I hadn’t gone too Italy when I had the chance, it’s something I would have regretted all my life.”

Gers agreed a staggered fee for Boyd with Birmingham City which could have brought £4m into the Ibrox coffers.

The 20-goal frontman turned that move down and Lazio know they will need to match that transfer fee.

But it’s all a far cry from the days when they were the BIGGEST spenders in world football.

They once forked out £35.5m for striker Hernan Crespo in 2000 and £29m for midfield maestro Gaizka Mendieta the following year.

They were also involved in the £30m sales of hitman Christian Vieri in 1999 and playmaker Pavel Nedved in 2001.

Now coach Delio Rossi is being forced to shop on a lower budget than some of his big-name predecessors.

Jordan said: “Lazio had great success not too long ago under Sven Goran Eriksson.

“They were Serie A champions and they were up there with Roma as the biggest clubs in Italy.

“They spent a lot of money and had some world-class players like Gazza in their squad.

“They matched the traditional clubs in the financial stakes and got their rewards.

“They spent big and it paid dividends — for a while.”

Get rid o' to Italy, Engurland or anywhere... Small time striker never gonna be success in a quality league FACT.

:2gunsfiring_v1:

FACT????

i am always amazed that people can say such things, there are many aspects to a football team, and frankly the Inzaghi brothers are two of the worst footballers I have ever seen but they know how to put the ball in the pokey, and therefore are very very well respected, therefore IF a team can play to Mr Boyd's strengths then he may score a few goals. I am not saying he will or he can just that he migth to totally dismiss such a thing is ridiculous.

I thought Boumsong would be a big hit in the EPL FACT, turned out to be crap but you catch my drift?

Lazio must clearly be going by his scoring record, because if they had seen how bad he was technically, they wouldnt go near him

EDIT: There is no chance of Rangers striker Kris Boyd joining Lazio, according to the Italian club's chairman Claudio Lotito. (Press Association, 0815 GMT)
