CELTIC could be facing a hefty punishment from the European Governing Body after fans at Parkhead displayed Palestinian flags during Wednesday's game.

CELTIC fans have vowed that they will match any fine that UEFA hands the club for a display of Palestinian flags at a recent match in charitable donations.

The club were notified by UEFA of a possible rule breach in their 5-2 win against Israeli side Hapeol Be'er Sheva on Wednesday.

Thousands of fans unveiled the flag of Palestine in a pointed protest against what many perceive to be the illegal occupation of that region by Israel.

A UEFA statement said: "Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Champions League play-offs, first leg, between Celtic FC and H. Beer-Sheva FC (5-2) played on 17 August in Glasgow (Scotland)."

The charges against Celtic are over the "display of an illicit banner".

Misdemeanours by fans, ranging from chanting to flags to flares, have cost the club over £100,000 in fines from the Champions League governing body.

But outraged Hoops supporters say that they will be motivated to do good by any potential punishment that is handed to the Parkhead club.

The hashtag #matchthefineforpalestine was spread on Twitter among fans and was soon trending in Glasgow as fans of other clubs joined in to slam UEFA's decision.

Right, UEFA. There you have it. So they've said that if you fine them, they'll laugh at you. they'll give you the finger.

Different punishment required, then. Close the stadium for a CL game.

Fucking arse wipes are all about self-publication. 'Look at how caring for the oppressed we are.' I reckon they've been finding playing the oppressed card tougher up here and in NI recently, so they've started branching out for new battles to fight to maintain the champions of the oppressed, victims image.

This isn't about the unfortunate people of Palestine or Israel. This is about sellic.

Police Scotland are saying they could not arrest anyone because waving a Palestinian flag is not criminal.

Celtic fans’ Palestine flags ‘not criminal’  CELTIC fans won’t face action for waving Palestinian flags during the 5-2 win over Hapoel Beer-Sheva - because cops say the supporters did not break the law. Police Scotland did warn fans prior to the match that action would be taken if they considered there to be criminality - but the club could still face a hefty fine from UEFA for breaching stringent rules regarding political demonstrations."

Yet taking the Union flag off bears at Dens  park last week is acceptable.

They will "hammer" them with another pathetic fine, hope the scum test the resolve of the IDF and try their rioting antics over there.

I hope not. Honestly think this time that they will be forced into doing something substantial. I can't recall anything similar in which a football club allows a football game to be used to incite hatred in a political event as precarious as the Palestine and Israel conflict, the arseholes have set a precedent and UEFA surely has to act to prevent this precedent from becoming norm. A five year European ban is what should be handed out but I suspect it'll be more lenient. At the very least they should be removed from this years tournaments.

They may be lauded just now over here but carry this on in Israel and i  can see this ending in tears and body bags...

was thinking the same. Silly little flags at cellic park and trending on twitter are one thing. Starting this shite in Israel is only going to end one way. However its a win win for them as no doubt footage of the big bad Israeli security forces giving it yeehaa to the cellic fans will turn them all into martyrs and freedom fighters overnight.
