With the recent improvements we've been seeing with the likes of Halliday/Morelos etc under Gerrard and our apparent need for quality in the centre of the pitch, do you think if he had still been here, Gerrard would have brought back the Niko of old? Or was he simply just too old by the time we got our hands on him?

I agree with this 100%, he came to us far too late be of any use to to us as a player, although he could possibly have made a decent coach for young midfielders to learn from.

I liked Kranjcar, but his legs were gone. He was never much of a mobile player at anypoint during his career, but he was a complete passenger in any game that had any sort of pace or intensity. 

An argument could be made for his passing ability that could've been helpful when trying to break down packed defences, but that argument is null and void when you consider the fact his knees were made of jelly.
