Only caught a few bits of the womens world cup, but some of the play was actually decent. The teams seem to have a mix of some technically decent players, and a few well below the level of the others. If it grows in popularity, the standard will probably rise and it will become a decent sport to watch. Will still always be in the shadow of the mens game though. Like tennis, put either of the Williams sisters in their prime against a guy around 100th in the world and they would get utterly destroyed. That is not to say that the womens matches are not worth watching though, its just a different level. It will continue to improve long-term with the improved funding it will now receive. Even if you don’t buy in to new-fangled concepts like equality of opportunity, or the idea that women can do things, this makes business sense. Like it or lump it, women’s football has become a massive growth area in the sport. The women’s World Cup showed an emerging market for it, and we know it’s going to be pushed to the moon in the next 5 years. It would be a terrible decision to not make sure our club/brand are as big a part of this as possible. I don’t think there’s any issue with people playing or even publicising / promoting it. Problem is being force fed it as though it’s a comparable standard, all the papers and social media are being flooded with is pish about how they earn less money and how Messi earned more than the whole tournaments players combined. There will be a backlash to it eventually, as there always is when it’s forced. Left hand forces it, right hand pushes back, and then gets offended. I think the play is too slow and deliberate atm for me, but obviously with funding it will improve through the years. There are other women's sports that I prefer to mens.
