The ball is launched to O’Riley (?) who squares it to Kyogo who has now returned to an ONSIDE position. But when the ball was played forward initially and the defenders were working out who to cover, he was yards offside and occupying the defenders, therefore interfering with play. Hes not occupying the defenders at all. They're not even paying attention to him. That's why it's worked out so well.

When the pass is played out wide to their winger, he's not interfering therefore he's not offside. He doesn't become active until the pass comes in to the box and at that point he's onside. They're taking advantage of a mental flaw in the offside rule. But the defenders have to be watching him, aware of him and positioning themselves accordingly. Would they behave differently if he wasn’t there? Yes, so he’s interfering with play.

Nah that’s not how it works hasn’t been offside for something like that for probably 20 years or so now lol I certainly can’t remember the last time that was viewed as offside anyway pretty much all the big attacking teams around Europe do that rabc10000

In accordance with the current offside rules, he's not offside. Whether we agree with it or not doesn't matter. It's a shitey definition of the rule and they're taking advantage of it. So they ARE aware, they SHOULD be positioning themselves to be able to respond which means that he IS influencing the game, ie interfering with play. This idea that he can stand ten yards offside and it doesn’t matter is insane, anywhere but a scum game in Scotland.
ZZed 4,558
The Exceptions Of course, there are exceptions… Any rule that generates this much controversy and confusion is bound to have exceptions. And offsides in soccer are no exception, either. An attacking player does not commit an offence when they receive the ball directly from: 1. Goal kicks 2. Corner kicks 3. Throw-ins 4. Dropped balls Also, it’s not an offside offence if the attacking player plays a ball that was last deliberately played by an opponent. This is different from saves and deflections we mentioned in the previous section. Those lead to offences. What this means is an offside player doesn’t commit an offence in situations like: • Latching onto the ball after a deliberate tackle by an opponent • Latching onto a misplaced pass from an opponent Also, there are “exceptions” that follow naturally from the rules for offside positioning and offences. For example, an attacking player isn’t offside if: • They are involved with or influence play in any way from their own half • They receive a backwards pass. For example, from a teammate closer to the opposition goal line than them.
