With the players already mentioned there would (imo) be bound to be too many collisions of opinion and too may contrary voices in the players' ears. Can anyone really imagine a constructive, effective parternship being struck up with any of the former players? I can't. Same goes for Jimmy Nicholl. It'd be a case of role reversal with Murty being the assistant. Can anyone really see Murty and Nicholl working effectively together with Murty as the lead? I can't. So who then? Well by 'assistant' if what is really meant is a guiding mentor who is not there every day alongside Murty but someone who sits above the day to day stuff and at sufficient distance to keep a proper overview perspective. Someone who knows the ins and outs of football management so can pass the right sort of guidance on to Murty, and who knows what needs to be done to make different types of players 'tick' or just do what they are fucking well told to do. Someone who has good enough experience and judgement to know when to intervene and go speak to Murty directly but who Murty can be at ease with in going to see for guidance...........then surely the guiding hand of choice in the current circumstances would be Walter?
