SeparateEntityMyArse 54,115
Gordon Waddell article in the Rebel today is incredible. He's ripping into us for ourstatememt about Collum. He agrees Collum is rank, the 2nd booking unjustified, the rule is absurd, and that the annual review of rules is due to take place so the timing of our requested review of it is sensible. His issue is we've not complained before, or when others have been hard done by..... then implies we should be done for criticising refs publicly.? The hatred and need to paint us as the wrongful party just oozes out of him. Bears
SeparateEntityMyArse 54,115
The big problem with Rangers' outrage at Willie Collum - Gordon Waddell You have to hand it to Rangers . It was a virtuoso performance, even by their sky-high statement standards. Going after Willie Collum like they’re the first to ever fall foul of one his decisions, though? Take a ticket and join the queue of victims, lads – you might get to the front by Christmas. It’s typical. Same as Stewart Milne of Aberdeen bleating last month about his grave concerns for Scottish football. Funny how it’s only an injustice when it’s their injustice. Yes, Collum’s decision to send Daniel Candeias off with a second yellow last weekend was as inexplicable as it was criminal. Its official explanation – ‘unsporting behaviour’ – doesn’t do much to alleviate the mystery. And yes, the lack of a rule for a club to appeal that kind of sending off for anything other than mistaken identity or simulation is a lousy omission. Yes, as supposedly our No.1 exponent, Collum is infuriating as a ref, week in, week out. And yes – as some of us having been saying for years, not days – there should be a mechanism that sees whistlers making consistent mistakes suspended the same way players are dropped. When you strip out all the haughty indignation, they’re all valid points. Except the one about their surprise at the SFA not instantly rewriting the rule book just because Rangers don’t like it, obviously. But here’s the thing. Instead of grandstanding with an appeal they knew would fail because there were no grounds for it, thus allowing them to trot out their traditional butt-hurt statement, why not quietly do the right thing by the game itself instead of going straight to the mattresses with all their threats and innuendo? To be fair, they at least say in their statement “Rangers shall now seek a fundamental review of the rules relating to red cards which result from two bookings of a player in a game.” Great. Good timing as well, actually. The annual rules revision process starts later this month, and their proposals are voted on at the agm in June. Good to know that as a responsible part of a members’ organisation, they’re doing their bit for the greater good. Aye, right. If that was the case, they would have broached the subject long before now, along with everyone’s concerns about declining standards in refereeing. The statement says it defies belief that Collum could be given the Aberdeen v Hibs game this week after such a blatant mistake, while Candeias is denied his right to go to work. Nope. Doesn’t even come close to defying belief for anyone who’s been paying attention. Refs are a more protected species than giant pandas. Some of us have been complaining for years about the fact there are few consequences for them, other than a rap on the knuckles from their supervisors. It’s not a new phenomenon. Nor is Collum making high-profile howlers. As the man pushed forward incessantly by his bosses, irrespective of performance, the man who gets Champions League games and major finals, is it not odd that you’d struggle to find a single fan of any club in the country who had a good word to say about him? Who talked about his calm authority, his personable interaction with the players, his sixth sense for what’s going on around him? All the qualities you expect from top official. He’s that special commodity in Scottish football, though, a unifying force. You have to laugh when you read that they’ll be submitting “a formal complaint about the performance of this referee. The manner in which he reacted to an incident involving our player made it obvious he did not give due consideration to his decision.” Manner? Have they never watched him? He reacts in that manner when he’s blowing for kick-off, far less sending someone off. It’s his management style. It would take some major surgery to remove the stick from his a***, never mind the whistle from his mouth. So what exactly is the formal complaint going to be? And why, as an influential member club, has it taken you this long if it’s by no means his first offence? What have you done about it while everyone else has suffered? Absolutely zilch until your own victimhood at his expense. Even the veiled claim of an ‘underlying issue’ which needs to be addressed with him – what is it? It leaves just enough ambiguity that their concern is a wider one than just the insinuation of him having a problem with Rangers – but not much. And it also rightly exposes them to another visit to the judicial panel under Rule 72 and article 96.1, forbidding clubs or individuals from publicly criticising refs to the point where they’re impinging on his character. Interesting to see if the SFA escalate it or not. The reassuring thing is that Steven Gerrardisn’t buying the paranoia or conspiracy. He’s happy to sit there in a press conference and say that their statement doesn’t speak for him, because he has an independence of thought. Once again, though, in classic Scottish football style, the vested interests are only ever concerned with progress and reform when it suits them. And once again, we can all wish that maybe someday someone in the game will have the integrity to fight a battle for change for everyone, not just themselves.
