I notice that you have written that your Muslim friend's 'reading' of the Qur'an prohibits him taking vaccines, but the Qu'ran does not state this, it is his own interpretation, reading, of it.

Having spent a few years instructing in the Middle East, including Iran, a well known, and strict, Muslim state. During that time a small number of training personnel had various ailments, including asthma and diabetes, they were not prevented from taking or administering any forms of treatments, including liquids during Ramadan, if it was for medical reasons.

Your friend has the right to his views of course, but it is possible he has misinterpreted the writings of the Qu'ran.

There are a few, and not just Muslims, who interpret the teachings of their religion to suit their own agenda.

And every reading should be respected.

I thought the initial Scottish Government statement when announcing the passport a couple of weeks ago said those who have a valid exemption could get confirmation from their GP.

One would think so based on that communication but there are a lot of anecdotal reports of GPs not issuing such letters when requested and it has been established that this is due to there being neither a process nor proforma.

I'll give you two examples of legitimate exemptions from my close friends.

1) an ethical vegan who is unable to take something from an industry (vaccine) which uses animal cells in its production process

2) a Muslim whose reading of the Quran prohibits the taking of vaccines of all descriptions

There are many more examples. It is not a simple issue.

This is absolutely and completely incorrect as judged by the 99% of mainstream Islamic scholars out there across all sects of Islam

Which sect is your friend from? I'm curious to know.

Official definition of veganism:

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicableall forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

Talk of crushing ants when out for a walk is an argument a 10 year old might make, or maybe an adult with learning difficulties.

This is directed at @mitre_mouldmaster not trying to be funny but just as a matter of interest, are insects classed as animals?
