Set Piece

Other than the direct free kick, I thought that was one of our poorest games for set pieces.

We seem to be playing for a knock down at every set piece rather than whipping balls on top of the goal with pace to attack and score directly?

They aren’t a big team and we’ve seen them lose a few goals to in-swinging corners. Hart in particular has been a liability.

Thought we missed an opportunity persisting with the floaty balls and out swingers.

Here is the thing about Tav (and i'm not hating on him).

Tav crosses the ball (either in play or a freekick) 10 times.

He hits the first defender 5/10 times.

He over hits the cross 4/10 times

He gets it right 1/10 times.

It's always been the same. However, he crosses the ball so often...it looks like he gets a lot of assists (which in fairness, he does)...but he is fucking murder! We MUST have someone else who can take a freekick?

Either that or he HAS to be told to stop fucking floating freekicks into the box. It's pish!

The goal aside, we made the wrong decision at just about every free kick we had today.

Good few times we were in a position to pile bodies into the box, given their weakness at set pieces, and really put them under the cosh.

Instead we were playing short and all the way back to the defence to then lose posession. Pointless.

Same is pretty much true of Borna to some extent. Borna’s deliveries are probably a bit more consistent but a lot of the time he is swinging a fairly pointless ball from too deep in to the box which does not give the attacker the opportunity to go and attack it and where our attackers are outnumbered.

Set pieces won't change until the takers leave the club. Best corner yesterday was taken by Cantwell on the left. No one else had a look in for any of the others.

Yeh Cantwell’s was hit with noticeably more pace and more dangerous.

It was also right into that 8 yard box line and Hart  stays on his line but no one was there. Only done it the once so ended up being an easy day for them.

Said it in the match thread before kickoff, inswingers into that 8 yard box is their weak spot and we should've capitalised on it more but because Tav was in charge again and fucking rotten at delivery, we didn't.

I'm not saying that. We should've had inswinging deliveries everytime with pace instead of the usual nonsense we are seeing because the same person takes every set piece.

Theres a stat about inswingers and it’s why they’re not the most effective.

a corner only leads to a goal around 2% of the time iirc

I've always felt tavs best assists come from deep early crosses in open play

Yes but as I said above, that's clearly their weak spot and should've been exploited more instead of a Tav delivery to Kyogo at the near post. He has to relinquish control of every single set piece and give others a go. He can still take his direct freekicks outside the box which he is clearly better at.

True, but against that mob, they have a recognised weakness, you focus on that and put them under pressure

Yeh that’s definitely true. Although part of that I’d imagine is they’re more likely to get punched away if the keeper is mobile.

They’ve struggled this year against in swingers as Hart can’t move his feet.

Might be something we look to exploit next time. Especially if other teams in the league continue to have success with it

The technique for curling it into the top corner and crossing in with pace is essentially the same, just more like a ‘second serve’ when crossing so there’s a bit more control - no idea how Tav got four or five completely wrong before his goal yesterday.

By the same token, after the dross he’d served up, it was very much out of the blue that he managed to find the top corner for the goal!
