Not to mention that clearance right at the end.

Carried us.

He did better in spells than most yesterday of the outfield crop he drives me nuts sometimes but when you deliver like he did yesterday as above three points literally won and saved the game .

It was a great cross for the goal.

A few years back Tav was swinging in about half a dozen crosses like that every game.

Now, they're rare.

But the first half defending was amateur hour again, nearly gifting them two goals.

It still amazes me than fans will except that level of mediocrity.

He's done, it's obvious. A penalty or an occasional cross is just papering over the cracks.

Clement isn't daft he'll want better for next season.

If Tav is first choice RB next season then that raises a red flag against Clement for me. Tavs been a great servant for us and his goal tally is nothing short of magnificent and excellent again this year. BUT he’s always been better going forward rather than defensively and for me he’s getting worse defensively. He struggles in one v ones, he’s getting slower in recovery from being up pitch and just showing the signs of age.

His goals should be covered by our forward players  more, a striker taking the penalties, strikers/midfielders sharing free kicks and hopefully a winger/midfielder taught to come in at back post to get Tavs goals from there.

Tavs been great overall but We need a younger, dynamic more robust, quicker and basically a more defensive minded player at RB next season.

Problem is we need players in every position so clement has got to decide where he wants to spend his budget. We also need quality and that doesn’t come cheap. Personally a can see half dozen players in positions other than right back needed first.

2 centre half’s, a good quality centre mid, 2 wingers and a number 9 would come before filling the right back position unless we were to put Sterling in there.

Sterling a right back, he's looked good in midfield, he's 24 now, so no longer a kid.

It's time for him to be given the chance to make the RB slot his.

He's quick, athletic and a better passer of the ball than Tav. What remains to be seen is how effective he can be attacking from the RB position.

I think him and Sima on the right side could be a good combination.

Wouldn’t be against trying him in there although a do prefer him in midfield, only game I can remember him playing there was against Morton a think and he was terrible but he was just in out the cold then.

It is a daft thread. He's one of the main reasons we are where we are in the title race.

He's a poor defender but this team relies on his output more than any other player.

Too many players relying on Tav imo.

We'd be at least another 9 points behind if not for his goals according to my calculations.

If your right back is scoring more goals than your best striker and more than your whole midfield combined you will be in trouble Alarm bells should be ringing!

He is the fall guy, but our deficiencies go much deeper than any individual.

I have to laugh at the usual guff about Tav is hopeless at defending. The full back role has changed over the years but so many here live in the past. A full back is now an attacking role relying on crosses and assists.

Just look at the EPL and the international full backs; Alexander- Arnold great crosser and dead ball specialist - hopeless defender, Trippier same, Cresswell, Zinchenko, Dalot , Luke Shaw all good going forward but disasters in defence. Noticeable that the top two teams play one natural central defender in a full back role just like Walter did all through his managerial career.

Fair points.

How many of our defenders would have made the 9 in a row starting 11?

Tell you what though, Walter would have loved to have a right back who scored 24 goals a season and counting...

Another big difference apart from the massive gap in quality was work ethic; quality individually but would fill in for their colleagues if they roamed. Even in the second spell with less quality players Walter would come downstairs to he dug out  and the work rate would intensify dramatically. Our present players have had it too easy for too long and I hoped Big Phil would have been able to sort that out.

The 9 in a row team were like brothers. They'd run to the point of collapse for their pals.

As you say, no chance can Phil can install that in a team in half a season.

Given time though, he can turn things around.

Phil is our key to success. The board really need to back him though.
