appearance related clause apparently .......

Kenny Miller will stay at Rangers next season after triggering one-year extension

  • Kenny Miller joined Rangers for third time on one-year deal last summer
  • Sportsmail understands the 35-year-old has triggered an extension
  • Miller says he wants to stay at the club and get them back to the top of Scottish football

Kenny Miller will be a Rangers player next season regardless of what division the Ibrox club are playing in.

The 35-year-old striker joined the Light Blues for the third time last summer after moving from Vancouver Whitecaps on a one-year deal.

But Sportsmail understands the agreement also contained an appearance-related clause that would trigger a second year for the veteran.

Kenny will remain with Rangers next season regardless of what division they will be playing in

With Rangers embroiled in potentially three play-off ties to determine which league they will play in next term, Miller has understandably been reluctant to discuss his own future lately.

However, it’s understood he has already played a sufficient number of games in order to take his time at Ibrox beyond his 36th birthday.

Miller has managed eight goals in 36 appearances this season to bring his tally over three spells at Ibrox to 75.

But he will be afforded the opportunity to break the century mark with another season in either the Premiership or the Championship.

Miller said on Monday: ‘I want to stay where I am. I’ve said before that I love the place. My goal when I came back was to get the team promoted and ultimately get back to the top of Scottish football and challenging for that league.

‘That might take a little while but we know the expectation involved with a club like Rangers. If we do get promoted over the next month, we’ll be back where we should be.

‘Fans aren’t going to accept us being also-rans. We have to get back to the top level as soon as possible. Of course as a striker, you can’t help but think ahead. I’d love to be the man that scores the goal that gets us back to the Premiership.’

Miller also recently spoke of his desire to continue playing for as long as possible.

Miller has played a sufficient number of games this season to trigger a one-year extension

‘I don’t think you can put a number on how long you’re likely to keep playing. You play for as long as you can and for as long as you feel you can still contribute to the cause. For the moment, I feel that I can - I feel fresh and I feel fit.

‘Any player who has finished up and retired misses the day-in and day-out on the training field.

‘The next step is coaching and management, but nothing quite matches playing so I want to stay in that for as long as I can.’

While Miller’s future looks to be secure, doubts remain over those of skipper Lee McCulloch, Kris Boyd, Jon Daly, Bilel Mohsni, Richard Foster, Steven Smith, Seb Faure, Ian Black, Kyle Hutton and Steve Simonsen.

Boyd was an unused sub for the second successive week as Rangers won the first leg of their play-off quarter-final 2-1 at Queen of the South.

The top-flight’s record scorer is keen to remain in Scotland but would appear to be surplus to requirements at Ibrox if Stuart McCall is handed the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

Kilmarnock boss Gary Locke is keen to take the striker back to Rugby Park for a third spell.

Fair enough. He is one of the ones I wouldn't mind keeping for another year anyway.

He may not have the pace he once had but he puts in 100% every game, and recently, he has shown that his experience can be vital in the bigger games.

Totally agree, wouldn't mind him staying at all. His legs may not be what they used to be, but his football brain is still as sharp.

Obviously we don't have a lot of choice given the contract, however, he's exactly the type of signing we should be avoiding from here on in; and that these types of clauses were included with some of their deals is proof positive as to how poorly we have been run for a frighteningly long period of time.

Says everything about the gross mismanagement of our club and our team.

Miller has added absolutely nothing to the team. He is tired, slow and inneffective. I agree that he works very hard most games, but 100% of nothing is...nothing!

He really should be gone immediately the playoffs have finished. I'll not be in the least surprised to see McCulloch et al get extensions as well.

We are a farce, and all these has beens are taking full advantage.....and keeping a promising youngster out of the team.

If McCall knew about this clause in his contract, he should be told that he will not be in charge of Rangers next season, after the plays, of course.

What's McCall done wrong exactly?

Put the best team out every week to try to get promoted?
