Thermopylae 15,287
John Toshack was saying on the Jim White show this morning that the lack of English players spending part of their careers abroad having to adapt to different types of football has left them with a team ill equipped to compete at the highest level. To some extent he probably has a point because the last decent English international team was during the exclusion from European when most of the best players left
RFCRobertson 11,790
Isn't it something like a million just to get a 6 month loan off a player in the English Championship? The amount of cash getting thrown around is ridiculous no question about it. I mean we're the most successful club in Britain yet right now a 1.8m player is considered "big spending" meanwhile at Man U they're talking about transfer fees of stuff like 84m The big clubs down south can easily snatch away any talent in other leagues. I mean Chelsea is after one of our lads for half million, just for the boy to likely get loaned out or something
Copland bear 7,966
When they are talking £6 million for a 34 year old Defoe, They both talk about it on Jim White show while both have been or are employed by sky tv, Who caused all this.? Sky caused it all with the money they pay along with BT while we get peanuts There is only one way that both We and Celtic could compete and that is if we get our own tv deal or join some sort of Atlantic league, because as it is we can't even compete with championship sides
pcbear 10,924
An average of 68 English players started in EPL games last season, that's under 30% of all the players, most being at lower clubs, the top 6 the other week had 14 between them with City and Arsenal starting one each, even English managers in the top flight are all but gone, Allardyce/Dyche/Pulis/Howe/Whelan that's 5 out of 22 with only one in the top 10. Financially its booming but to the detriment of the nation side.
SuperPapac05 3,383
Nah, English players being too comfortable and unambitious to move to one of the top leagues abroad is the problem. Same goes for Scotland. The national team would improve so much if most of the players took their lazy arses out of the championship and have a crack at the Bundesliga, Serie A, Portuguese Super League, La Liga, Ligue 1. Fair enough, it won't be a top team, but they still get to play them, learn to adapt to new cultures and disciplines that will easily benefits everyone. keithgersbear 3,225
England reached World cup semi final in 1990, Semi Euro 96, Quarter finals WC 02, 06. Competitive at least and no one said this at that time. Maybe the players just aren't up to it. They pick poor managers consistently too. cushynumber 25,178
It's turned it into a millionaires playground where the players are all pals and nobody rocks the boat. No passion and utter boredom for the most part. The extent that sky are trying to talk up the product is embarrassing.

Bigsasasfloppyhair 13,310
Totally fucked it. When you have players at the age of 16-18 being offered contracts of 20k a week having achieved nothing in the game just shows they have money to burn. Players are millionaires first and footballers second, money is just thrown at them and the real hard work ethic is lost. I came through the ranks at Motherwell in same group as Hammell, Pearson n McFadden and remember days after training when you cleaned boots, the players gym n toilets, team mini bus, even painting the stands. Players down south will do none of that.
Prso's headband 35,758
Aye it is. But do any of those teams come in for the Scottish players? Oliver Burke being an exception as the vast majority of Scotland prob didn't know who he was until signed for that much money

harlands plater 17,007
Even mediocre clubs have millions to throw about on average players, Sky are giving them ridiculous money just to be cannon fodder for the teams people actually want to watch. As for the players, they're on so much money they don't appear to give a fuck whether their team wins or loses, watch them walking off at the end of a game. Captain Hilts 12,819
No players in England squads are standout players at their own clubs, except perhaps Sterling and previously Rooney (who's now more of a hindrance than a standout at Man Utd). Their squads are generally made up of competent players but are by no means world beaters. You look at the likes of Spain and Germany and their squads are full of players who are key players for their respective clubs. Their respective leagues also put a lot more time and money in to developing players of their own nationalities. That is why they're so successful. plumbGER 24,518
Cash has played it's part in ruining it. I pretty much hate English football now, the fans are fucking rubbish aswell with all the generic chants "you know who we are, you know who we aaaaare, champions of England, you know who we are" change a few words but the tune is sung at every single game. It's no longer the working mans game, tickets are drastically over priced and big clubs fill the stadium with happy snapper tourists. Pish. CoatbridgeBear 7,113
You see games from years ago and players are going fucking nuts, determined to win at all costs. Nowadays they're all pals on both teams and it's instagram posts of them all out together etc, they genuinely couldn't care less if they lose. denya 1,661
The EPL has become a bore the past few years. The money being thrown about and with that the massive influx of foreign players has damaged their national team. The fact that the top four teams basically only have about 3 home grown players max in their starting lineups is terrible.

They get so much tv money they have to dispose of it on wages, agent and player fees. Ger77 742
Credit must go to the SFA, SPFL and top division clubs in previous seasons who were able to ruin Scottish Football over the last few years without the large sums of money afforded down south.
