Do we know how much we offered and how much he wanted. I understand he was on 15k a week at Burnley surely we could have gone higher than that?

IIRC Colin he has a clause in his contract which states if Burnley got relgated then his wages were being halfed or something, and we offered him the wages he was getting last year in he EPL. But maybe he see's us in a struggle and tried to get the most he can.

Now TWB take a lesson from yesterday from an older wiser ( ;) ) Bear.... no signing is complete until you see the player paraded.

How true that is!

Aye knew there was the relegation clause in his contract. Would love to see where he ends up though. I wouldnt mind betting once he realises he isnt wanted by any EPL sides he will come crawling to us again a la Kygriakos

Looks like we could have offered Eagles less than what he was on at Burnley, so it wasnt a case of us not being prepared to break the bank by offering over what appears to be some kind of wage cap that we now have, but actually us downsizing that much and refusing to meet a players basics right to ask for at least the wage he is currently on to move club...? If Eagles wanted that badly, I reckon Owen Coyle would have taken him to Bolton by now.

Rangers showed their frustration towards Burnley winger Chris Eagles last night when they took the unusual step of publicly stating that their attempts to sign him had collapsed “due to the player’s wage demands”.

The 24-year-old could not agree terms with the Ibrox club and decided to stay in the Championship, although last night he was being linked with Sunderland. Rangers and Burnley had agreed a fee of around £2m and it is believed Eagles was offered more than £12,000-per-week but he wanted significantly more.

Rangers chief executive Martin Bain, who expected Kevin Thomson to complete a £2m move to Middlesbrough today, said the club would now turn its attention towards alternative signing targets.

A statement from Bain on the club website read: “Yesterday we agreed a fee with Burnley for Chris Eagles and he visited Ibrox and Murray Park, but his wage demands were such that they would not be met. It is disappointing we were not able to agree terms with the player, who received a good offer, and we will look elsewhere.

“I have stated already that we recognise the squad requires fresh faces but the window closes in August and we will take our time to decide on the best way of utilising the resources we have. Subject to final paperwork, Kevin Thomson will sign for Middlesbrough tomorrow.”

Eagles’ contract runs out in a year and Burnley regarded Rangers’ offer as good money for a player who could sign a pre-contract with someone else in six months. Walter Smith had hoped that Eagles would become the first player bought by the club for almost two years. At last he has some money to spend, but the search goes on.

it's ashame that playing for the world's most successful club comes down to money, rather than passion and love for football.

We can't expect him to love the club. If it's the game we want him to love, he can do that anywhere. He will know his worth and how much he can get. When all said and done, it's his job and he will want the best that he can get, just like we would.

If we pay $12,000 a week, we will get a $12,000 a week player. My concern is, he must have had an idea of what we were prepared to pay, so I'm not sure why he came up in the first place.

The Sun's take on it:

CHRIS EAGLES will jet out to Singapore with Burnley - and leave Rangers high and dry.

The Clarets wide man left Gers chiefs stunned when he rejected an offer believed to be worth £15,000-a-week basic - and demanded five grand MORE.

Rangers had agreed a fee of £1.5million with the Turf Moor outfit before opening contract talks with the player.

They were confident he'd be jetting to Australia with them for their pre-season tour next week.

Now he'll head to Singapore with Burnley boss Brian Laws and his squad after rejecting an offer which would have seen him double his Clarets wage.

SunSport can reveal the bumper financial deal which was sensationally snubbed.

I understand that Gers chief executive Martin Bain tabled a deal worth £15,000-a-week to the 24-year-old.

That's twice as much as the £7,000-a-week the ex-Manchester United kid currently earns.

He was on £14,000-a-week when Burnley were in the Premier League last season but those terms have been halved now they're back in the Championship.

Rangers felt the package they were able to offer would be good enough to land the winger. But former England Under-21 starlet Eagles demanded an extra five grand to take his weekly wage to a whopping £20,000.

Rangers were left stunned with his hardline stance, especially given he'd have earned bonuses on top of their basic offer.

But after a stand-off Eagles and his advisors refused to buckle before walking away from the move yesterday afternoon.

The official Burnley website released a statement which confirmed Eagles "had decided a move to Glasgow Rangers was not in his best interests. A fee had been agreed but he was unable to agree personal terms."

Gers will now look elsewhere to bolster their squad before they jet out on their pre-season training camp in Sydney.

But the loss of Eagles has been a hammer blow to boss Walter Smith and his plans for the new campaign. He's desperate to find an attacking wide player and saw Eagles as the perfect fit.

Smith personally got involved in talks with Eagles at Ibrox on Wednesday afternoon.

He was hopeful an agreement could be reached - but quickly realised Eagles was NOT certain to sign.

Last night it emerged there was interest from Sunderland. But Eagles has just 12 months to run on his Burnley contract and looks set to let that run out.
