STV has learned that Rangers have registered an interest in Palermo defender Dorin Goian.

The Ibrox club have turned their attentions to the Romanian centre back after their move for Espanyol defender Raul Rodriguez collapsed earlier this month.

Ibrox sources confirmed to STV their interest in the player late on Thursday evening, as they step up their attempts to bring in fresh blood in defence.

Goian moved to Italy in 2009 from Steaua Bucharest, having spent four years with the 23-times Romanian champions. Prior to his time with Steaua, the 30-year-old's career was also spent in his homeland with FCM Bacau, Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt and Foresta Falticeni.

Palermo paid £2 million euro to sign Goian but he played second fiddle for most of the 2009/10 season, before injury restricted his appearances last term. At international level, he has 37 caps for Romania, scoring against Belarus, Germany, Holland, France and Georgia.

Goian, who stands at 6ft 5in tall, also has a limited experience of Scottish football, having seen his penalty saved by then-Motherwell goalkeeper John Ruddy during the away leg of the Steelmen's eventual 6-1 aggregate defeat to Steaua in the 2009 Europa League third qualifying round.

Goian would require a work permit to move to Glasgow, which would be followed by an application for an accession worker card, which is required for Romanian nationals coming to live and work in the UK.

Rangers' bid to sign defender Rodriguez from Espanyol fell through when the La Liga side refused to accept a £400,000 offer.

Fellow Spaniard Carlos Cuellar is yet to get back to the club on his decision over a return to Ibrox, with Rangers having already agreed a £2 million fee with Aston Villa.

Probably not.

Our current squad should be good enough to see off Hearts and Malmo anyway.

We can register one player as a "wild card" 24 hours before the qualifier.

Yeah mate ano but that would mean the wild card would need to be done by monday so dont think it would be done that quick.

i think its more likely we aren't getting bartley or than boogies going than us not getting cuellar. but we will see on that one.

Looks to me that we are looking for one cheap/loan (Goian/Rodriguez/Bartley) and one bigger transfer fee signing (Cuellar/Juhasz) regardless of Bougherra.

The first thing you need to know about Goian is that, on his day, you would back him against pretty much anyone in the air. In his first season in Italy, as others have said, he had to play second fiddle to Kjaer and Bovo, but there's no shame in that- one was the best young centre back in Italy, while the other was recently called up to the Italian national team.

Last season, I know he struggled a bit with injuries, but he played when he was fit, the highlight being scoring the winner against Milan in March. Having said that, Palermo had the 2nd worst defensive record in the entire league last season....they had a lot of off the field trouble, and struggled to find any real rhythm.

He would do a job in the SPL though, no doubt about it.

Cant disagree with any of that but i can only add to the last parts...

He did play games for Palermo last season, but the fact they have signed Milanovic, Andrea Mantovani and have Mauro Cetto on trial shows that he didnt do much to cement his place. They did start to play 3 at the back towards the end of last season but again it will be Bovo, Munoz and Andjelkovic or one of the new players.

I do think though that he would do really well with us and has loads of experience of playing in Europe from his Steaua days as well as playing against top quality players in Italy!

He is coming tor talks next week and is close to becoming a Rangers player

Dorin Goian is a step away from becoming a player of Glasgow Rangers. The

Romanian central Palermo, should arrive next week in Scotland, where if the

transaction goes ahead, would receive 500,000 euros per season for three years.

Any transfer would yield about 550,000 euros into the coffers

Rosanero.
