Popular Post Ozblue 4,331
One of the best left-backs we ever had. I still clearly remember to this day when Eric broke his leg in 3 places against Bobby Smith at Wembley. On the 6th minute after Scotland almost scored, the English 'keeper, Gordon Banks blootered the ball into the Scotland half where Smith latched on to it but couldn't control it and as the ball spun away Smith latched on to it but again he couldn't control it and it broke away towards Caldow who moved in to clear and as he pushed it back to big Ian Ure, Smith came thundering in late and stuck his left boot into Caldows' left shin, so that was the end of his international career. The thing I will never forget when Smith was hobbling off towards the sideline was the noise we made booing Smith all the way. R.I.P. Eric. Davie Wilson moved to left back after Eric's injury, Scotland proceeded with 10 men to give England a leathering and a master class 2-1, those indeed were the days when Scotland like The Rangers, feared no one ! Laudrup1984 25,100
Like many I am too young to have seen him play in the flesh. However there can be no doubt that he gave so much to our great club. It's easy for the younger fans like myself (well kinda young!) and the even younger, next generation of fans to not be fully aware of the roles guys like Caldow, Jardine, Baxter etc played in our history. It's therefore important that we all play in part in keeping their incredible legacies going. It's always fascinating hearing older bears talk about the greats. He was by all accounts a great player, a great servant and a great man too. Another good one gone sadly. Sad. Bobby Hume
