Didn’t stick to a plan he was given by the club over pre season and came back massively out of shape

That’s a really poor show to be honest.

Between that and Matondo’s time keeping you wonder what the fucks going in with Gio and his team. Total lack of discipline.

Gerrard has his faults, but his preseasons were brutal for the players in terms of getting into shape.

Sure I read something in one of the recent Athletic articles that mentioned we'd ditched the double sessions that Gerrard had done in pre-season. Obviously that's likely to happen when coaches change etc, but we do look lethargic at times. Suppose there's a good argument to be had that we did for the final months of Gerrard's tenure, but there can be multiple causes.

Think somebody in here said that pre season was more pitch and tactical based than it was fitness based.

You do kind of wonder exactly what they worked on. We seem to have good tactical flexibility to suit specific challenges, but we certainly don't impress our own tactics upon our opponents - or we do and they're just too passive.

Last 24 month we looked fitter than everyone by a long way. Now our players are reportedly out of condition and we are sluggish in matches. If players are genuinely less fit it is a massive criticism of the fitness regime. There is no excuse for it in elite sport today.

Never saw one preseason photo of a player throwing up at the side of the training camp pitch this summer. Milsom had everyone throwing up in his first preseason under Gerrard.

It's the easiest thing to get right as well IMO, it's not like is really specific technical stuff. Sure the different positions require a different level of conditioning and full backs will have to make longer sprints then forwards etc so may be some differences there but generally it's not hard to come up with a conditioning programme pre season and then taper it off to just maintain throughout the season based on if its a 1 or 2 game week. I honestly doubt whoever is in charge of sports science/ strength and conditioning at the club under gio. We was in much better shape under Gerrard.

Our fitness at tail end of last season was incredible, twice going to ET before huge domestic games, going to ET in those as well and still looking fitter than Hearts and sellik

I totally agree with that, but that was off the back of a Gerrard pre-season with generally only maintainance work throughout the year. I think the point is that this season we don't seem to have matched that level of fitness work in our pre-season.
