All we had to do was play our strongest team for three more cup games and our trophy drought was over. Surely as athletes our best players can handle 2 games a week. Recently we have made out how we have 2 players for every position. Tonight that backfired.

Bassey and Zungu need to play for the reserves for a period of time and Kent and Aribo need dropped to the bench.

You cannot imagine the boost this will give the team from the East. Come Saturday we need to ensure we take no prisoners and win by a landslide.

Could not agree more.

Having only one defensive midfielder was the mistake. We play with two every week. Bassey got less protection than Barisic  ever gets.

Yep Kamara was missed from the start. Although I think the person we've missed most in the last couple of weeks has been Ryan Jack.

Winning tonight and losing on Saturday would’ve been worse.  So no, tonight was the time to play a weakened side.  When we win the league no one will give a fuck about this cup.

There’s a fucking trophy within grasp - you play the strongest team. St Mirren were on a good run of form, it’s an away cup game and we need silverware- you don’t fuck about.

Itten....really???

I really don't know what every c*unt sees is this lad... personally, I think he's overated for his actual performances.

However, he wasn't the worse or alone on the night....

Kent plays one good game in 5 and really and don't start me on Aribo's performance. He  fucks about going in circles with his one leg and then cant pass a simple ball to anyone in the same coloured shirt.

I hope SG roasts everyone of them for they deserve it big time.

The system of Itten up top with Defoe feeding off scraps would have been much better.  Playing Defoe up top on his own basically took away our ability to play long balls up.  Against a low block sometimes long balls and winning the scraps are the way to go, especially with time running out on a game.

Thats a pisser. Another lesson learnt, strongest possible team and rest players once victory is assured. Gerrard said pre match this was huge as it was a chance to reach a semi at hampden, well too many were not listening, the expectations and traditions at this club demand better.

Referee his officials were fucking atrocious anaw.

Leave out Kamara? He was at fault fir us conceding the winner

We conceeded 3 though.

Do we conceed 3 if he starts, IMO no.

Its a sickner of a result - signs at the weekend that we were maybe getting ahead of ourselves and forgetting you have to win the right to play.

2 teams now, got in outer face, hard tackles , kicked us about roughed us up and we lose that battle.

Take a while for the fans to get over this one, let's hope they players don't dwell on it and get back to a big winning run.

Hes now going to be sounded out as the weak link by all our opponents for the rest of the season when picked. Bring on when we are cruising in a game but should never start again.

Agreed, the guy will be targeted, he needs time to learn how to deal with players running rings around him. A big mistake to put him in that situation imho.

To some extent but there were several tactical changes that could have been made earlier - Barasic for Bassey, Kamara on, Defoe on. Davis on. Should have been done before we were chasing the game with the clock ticking down.

All of them could've and should've been made at half time. Then again they should've been starting. Disastrous error on Gerrards part.

So you're that despite being unbeaten so far, it was acceptable to go out of the cup?

No it's not acceptable but your saying it's ok if we were allowed in to lambast the players after their first defeat of the season, we got caught out tonight probably thinking we would stroll it , I blame SG for that.

They targeted Bassey from the start as the weak link.

And they were right. Any sensible person can see he is completely raw : we give him a pass because he is a big lad and barrels forward but he is not ready. We have for away with rotation of him occasionally and it seems the management have been lulled by this.

We had better have a response to this or the damage will not be limited to the league cup.

That's probably fair actually.

Fir me the issue was starting Bassey, that is what has cost us the end.

League is massive for us, but every major trophy in Scotland should be massive.  We were rightfully stick on favourites to win our first big trophy in.....well you know.

We blew it big time, especially after scoring so early and controlled that first half imo.  Second half was a total clusterfuck and reminded me of the struggles we've had on numerous occasions in the past few seasons where we couldn't create anything.  Absolutely no time to feel sorry for themselves, Motherwell game is a must be win to keep the pressure on in this league.

Massive opportunity totally spunked against no more than a hard working team.

Maybe the management are prioritising the league over this period?

Get a grip ffs, were not unbeatable, our first defeat of the season against a team that were hungry as fuck, we started the wrong team for a start.

Have you not noticed the type of team we play.

League games = 10 men behind the ball hoping to fuck they can get a point, if not no great loss.

Europe = teams think they can beat us. Meaning we have space to play.

Cup games = Teams have fuck all to lose therefore, may as well have a go as theres no great loss.

League cup game tonight = biggest threat out, therefore cup is open to anyone. If in doubt refer back to season 2015/16.

Spot on, first half they sat off us it was a stroll

2 nd half they pressed us and we didn’t have a clue

you wonder if more teams do that especially at home would it be the same as tonight.

the worst thing is we play them in a couple of weeks☹️

Barisic aside that pretty much was our strongest team.  Before the game almost everyone said it was a strong side and a sign Rangers were taking the competition seriously.  McGregor, Goldson, Balogun, Tavernier, Kamara, Aribo, Arfield, Roofe, Kent, etc.  These are regular starters for Rangers.  You think playing these regular starters is a sign the competition is not being taken seriously?  Strange.

Is it beyond some posters to comment without resorting to personal name calling and insults?    We won't all have the same opinion on what went wrong or where we go from here.   We are all angry at tonight's abysmal display but that shouldn't be the excuse to act like idiots.
