What a player he was back in the day. Elite goal scorer.

Stating the obvious but it’s a great time to be a striker at Rangers with Jermain Defoe and Roy Makaay as your mentors. Absolute fountain of knowledge for everyone in the squad.

It’ll be interesting to see if Alfie’s game adapts at all to being more selfish/direct while staying nearer the box area, rather than dropping deeper like he has for some time now.

He seems very highly rated as a coach.

Is he really or is everyone thinking because he was a class striker he will be a class coach?

Everywhere I've looked he's not been in a job since Gio left Feyenoord so unless I'm missing something I can't see a highly rated coach sitting out the game for that long.

I’m gonna look full of shite here coz I can’t remember where I’d read/watched it but I found an article/interview about him where he was being talked up as a good coach

Ill try find it after work

Him and Pauleta up front. Some strike force.

Then when Pauleta went it was him with Diego Tristan and Walter Pandiani.

Football used to be so much better.

We were linked with Tristan at some point, weren't we?

Pandiani was an absolute monster. He was class in the air too, he wasn't the tallest man (6 ft I think?) but he could outjump anyone.

I think we had agreed a deal to sign him but he had a change of heart at the last minute.

Sure we tried to buy Samuel Eto'o at the time too when he was at Real Madrid but that could have been the season after.

That was Mcleish

Football was better in the early 2000s and I’ll not hear any different

Even with money beginning to take over the Premiership down south, the product wasn’t completely watered down like it is now

Every team seemed to have that iconic player with individual brilliance that could turn a game on its head. Players are over trained now. Grumble grumble.

I also feel like the bigger clubs having far bigger squads lends towards the smaller clubs not having the odd iconic player the way they used to.

Aye the Premiership was amazing entertainment back then and in the 90s . Was the perfect blend of modern , fresh and exciting but still had that old school vibe in the background with many of the teams still playing at their traditional grounds.

for me now it’s a bit of an over commercialised snoozefest at times played out in soulless stadiums

I think he was at Mallorca when we tried to get him.

Did we not also try and sign Hakan Sukur too? That might have been McLeish era rather than Advocaat though.
