Seville season we were probably the fittest team in Europe, extra time, penalties etc and still coming back and winning against them and Hearts both in extra time, looking stronger. That is where pre-season sets the tone. Gio and Beale didn’t do preseason very well. Pre-season is absolutely crucial to the fitness of players even this deep into it.

Gio was never going to win with his summer, we had played over 60 games the season of seville, had he ran them into the ground pre season no doubt there would have been complaints about how the players were shattered etc etc

Sometimes too much can be just as bad, remember how unfit they all looked coming back from dubai before covid hit

He didn't run them into the ground at all. Airfield said it was the complete opposite of that.

He has been injured a lot since he signed for us.

He could do with bulking up. Would give him more of an explosive sprint and make him less likely to get injured imo.

A would probably look to sell if we can get a decent fee

Thats my point, we'd just finished a season of over 60 games, with a lot of the squad playing over 50 games, had he ran them into the ground and they started dropping like flies he'd have got slaughtered

Everyone talks about how fit we were going to seville, a lot of that would have been a mental issue, players running more because we still had the high of europe and on the way to a euro final, place in the team to fight for etc

Gerrard ran them into the ground in dubai right before covid hit and we looked a shambles when we came back,

Surely any benefit of a good pre season is long gone and now has no bearing at this time of the season?

Nah, after you build up that fitness it's maintenance, but with games coming thick and fast you don't get the time to do any sort of real fitness work as focus needs to be one recovery and tactics.

It's like the difference between Naismith when he missed a pre-season injured and when he was fit. Players are always playing catch-up after that.

Yep always said that. Gio was used to being in euro finals so I'm sure he was well qualified to judge it

Is he good?

He looked a decent prospect at times in his first ever senior games, was thrown by a clueless fraud as manager, his positioning and decision making need a bit of work, working with a real manager and coaching team should improve that, was decent in the tackle at times and has a bit of pace, showed some decent passing, good attitude and athletic. He probably won’t ever be good enough to be a regular starter for Rangers, not sure he even wants to be here, sure I read he wants to be back down south, championship in England will probably be his level.

Or he might surprise us all and kick on to be a top player 🤣

10 years time and @Jimfanciesthedude will still be finding new ways to excuse Gio’s shit second season.

Whos excused it, we bought poorly, we didnt get rid of wasters like your wee lover kent and morelos and we suffered

But don't act like my point isnt viable we played 65 games from 31st july to 22nd may in the seville season

Giving them 3 weeks off then battering them with a massive pre season would have been just as damaging, as i said (and conveniently ignored) when gerrard ran them into the ground in dubai during the winter break we came back and were a fucking shambles

Hammering players mid season is hardly the same in getting the fitness up in pre-season.

Gio fucked it fitness-wise wether that was through naivety in thinking players would retain their fitness during their break or not pushing them enough in pre-season that's the reality.

You can go on about 65 games all you want, other teams do it and still knock their pans in during pre-season.

Disagree about other teams etc, we played a game on average every 4.5days for the whole of the seville season, apart from mid season break the players had absolutely no time to recover from niggles, strains etc, and our squad isnt as big as these other teams (don't know many other teams that played 65 games in 10months)

I think the team had more mentally checked out with gio rather than physically, the CL doings, the morelos incident, the piggery humping, barely any new signings doing it or fit to play and guys like morelos and kent being the way they were, this down to gio losing the dressing room by not being a big enough manager to do whay had to be done with guys like morelos and kent

4 players played more than 50 games. It’s hardly David Weir and Cuellar.

Tav has played over 4200 minutes this season.

Cant find any Prem players that are close to that. Rice and Fernandez who have played the most minutes for Arsenal and Utd under 3500.

Pep and Klopp rotate even more.

Our fixture list and lack of ability to rotate has been brutal.

Tav is superhuman. But it’s not surprising we look fucked and are picking up injuries left, right and centre.

The likes of Rice and Fernandes also play internationals through the season. Both could play 3 more friendlies before the euros and are likely to compete well into the latter stages of that as well. That's the case for many players at that level. Tavernier and Goldson are able to play so much club football because they aren't internationals.

We’ve been picking up injuries far before any fixture pile-up.

Seems it’s the Rangers way, remember way back to the Ibrox title decider with Aberdeen, literally finished the season with I think it was 8 fit players, we had players on the pitch who played the full 90 minutes then came out on crutches for the lap of honour lol

Did we not play something like 6 CB's in a game once that season too?

Yeh we’ve got players with recurring injury histories and we’ve picked up some freak ones.

But Yilmaz, Cantwell, Sterling, Cortes are the muscle related ones you’re more likely to pick up with playing a match every 3 days.

Just saying there’s not some evil voodoo hanging over the club. Small squad competing on four fronts with little rotation will take its toll.

Didn't one of the squad/youth players get a stress fracture that day as well? Tom Cowan??
