The statue was erected in tribute to Davie Cooper, who lost his fight for life following a brain haemorrhage shortly after his 39th birthday.

He suffered in critical condition at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital after collapsing at Clyde FC’s Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld.

He was regarded as one of the most gifted wingers in Scotland at the peak of his career.

His Hamilton memorial was unveiled in 1999 by councillor Tom McCabe, then leader of South Lanarkshire council and Rangers legend and friend of Cooper’s Ally McCoist.

It was created by sculptor Kenny Mackay.

Motherwell and Rangers have been contacted for comment.

It surfaced online on Saturday as celtic sealed a historic double Treble win over Motherwell on Saturday.

The yob can be heard chanting: “We’re going to win the league and the Scottish Cup.

“Davie Cooper is dead, we’re going to dig him up.”

The move has been blasted by a number of supporters, who brand the video “shameful” and “stinkin”.

One Rangers fan said: “I would never condone that done to a celtic legend”

And one celtic fan hit out: “I am a celtic fan and am disgusted with this vid. As a kid I watched Davy when he played with Clydebank and was heartbroken when he signed with Rangers, but he was always a Rangers fan and I never resented that fact.

“Davy Cooper was a magician on the field and I still miss him. That pr*ck wouldn’t be doing that if he actually saw Davy Cooper playing for Scotland and Rangers.

“Do Rangers fans go to the jock Stein statue and do that. No they f***ing don’t I am ashamed that a so called celtic fan would do this. Most of the celtic fans are more respectful.”

Unfortunatley  every club has this portion of fans who go beyond what is acceptable, we call them Fenian bastards they call us orange bastards , big deal, when it comes to shite like this I'd rather we didn't have cunts as supporters who stoop to the lowest, hope the cunt gets gang raped then set on fire.

Obviously don't like the song but it's very much a 2 way street when it comes to songs like that

Shouldn't be, I believe opinions and standards have changed rapidly from both sets of fans since we used to sing songs about the likes of Johnny Doyle and Paul Wilson.

I can't think of any we sing nowadays regarding opposition players who died.

Of course there are the "cultural" and even WW2 songs that get sung, not a lot to do with football itself, but surely we have moved on and can't condone casual disrespect to our dead footballers ?

Songs are just songs at the end of the day if it's kept on buses etc, that does go both ways, but to go to a memorial and video himself doing it is cunty.

Some of these yahoos think they can get away with anything at the moment, it's all high jinks in their eyes - they believe they are untouchable. Look at the fans jumping on top of the constabulary's vehicles on Saturday, or even more disrespectful their very own players grappling with the police to get a hat for a laugh. This however, is a total premeditated act of a sour ned - hope they throw the book at this zoomed.

I thought I knew the full songbook, I can not remember any song about Paul Wilson apart from "Wilsons a darkie" during the game.

That's maybe because of a cultural embarrassment at their tiny peckers?
