We don’t have the money to buy a keeper who would be head and shoulders above all the others in the league. I’d rather we spent money on defenders who will make the keepers job easier.

People said the same last year with the ‘McLaughlin’s more than good enough’ chat and look where that left us.

Not going to write Butland off completely until we’ve seen him but let’s be honest it’s an uninspiring signing.

Butland is levels above McLaughlin tbh.  McLaughlin was always a Hearts level keeper at best. Never ever understood why he was so highly rated among some people within our support.

I don’t disagree, just think the attitude/justification from some has been similar.

It’s such a key position for a club like us that a guy who does a job won’t do.

Mind when folk were moaning about Gio not signing Dutch players/using the Dutch market? We've now gone 180 and are moaning at Beale for doing the thing GvB was criticised for not doing.

Point isn't about signing players from manager's home country, more the fact we spend a lot of time in that market. Think you're missing the point slightly, the Dutch thing was probably more about the intrigue of players we knew little about, in a fresh market, backed by a manager who knows them who we wanted to trust. With Beale, this could be Gerrard, Gio, Warburton, even Murty, so far. That market is all too familiar to us hence the lukewarm reaction, also without too much gain or success in the time it has become familiar either.

It was literally something that was complained about. 'Dutch manager and coaches and we're not utitlising the Dutch market that they all know'. Now an English boss with English coaches does it, it's lazy.

So because people don’t know about the Dutch market that’s exciting even if the players could end up shite?

Sadly aye. Tell me you weren't more excited for Dragan Mladenovic coming in than you were Alex Rae. Not sure why, but that's always the one I go back to . Folk just generally more likely to give players more of a chance if they are less familiar.

Point I'm making is if we already spent time in the Dutch market, and Gio continued, we'd probably have people giving off the same accusations. Mind even when we got linked with players in Belgium all the time, folk gave Ross Wilson the lazy comments too.

Not really as I’d always quite liked Alex tae as a player

McLaughlin played his part in getting us past PSV.  Otherwise, meh. Says a great deal that he couldn’t take the job from McGregor when it was all but handed to him.

Which goalkeeper we could realistically get would you call an inspired signing ?
