More claimants join sexual abuse class action against celtic

A string of alleged sexual abuse survivors have joined a multimillion-pound lawsuit against celtic FC, heaping further pressure on the Parkhead club.

It means that about 35 alleged victims of molestation at celtic Boys Club, its feeder side, are poised to take part in a class action under legal powers that have only recently come into use.

This month, at a hearing at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, Lord Ericht, the judge, agreed to allow the case to move to the next stage, which ensures lawyers for celtic FC will need to respond to the claims. Papers have now been formally served on celtic.

Patrick McGuire, a partner with Thompsons Solicitors Scotland, said the class action had been strengthened by new claimants. “I can confirm we have been approached by additional survivors of abuse at celtic Boys Club who want to join the group,” he said. “Their experiences range from physical violence to disturbing conduct when they were in the showers, all the way through to some of the worst possible types of sexual abuse.”

Thompsons will set out evidence which it claims shows that the boys’ club and celtic were linked financially and therefore legally. celtic previously said it was “appalled by any form of historic abuse” but maintained it was a “separate entity” to the boys’ club — a claim which has been challenged by documents unearthed by The Times.

Six men associated with celtic Boys Club, celtic FC and celtic East Youth Club, an Edinburgh-based feeder club, have been convicted of sexual offences against boys.

McGuire hoped that further survivors who had been “suffering in silence” would make themselves known.

“It is clear that a paedophile ring, operating at the heart of celtic Boys Club, was responsible for decades of abuse against a horrifying number of boys and young men,” he said. “The abuse at the boys’ club was carried out on a near-industrial scale.”

Group proceedings were introduced into the legal system last year. They allow groups of two or more people with the same or similar claims to raise a single action in the Court of Session.

celtic FC failed to respond to a request for comment. Last month it said in a statement: “The club is continuing to deal with these sensitive matters in conjunction with its advisers. The club again expresses its sincere sympathy, regret and sorrow to those affected and reiterates it will stand by its responsibilities, respecting the due process of law.”
