The Penalty Given Against Goldson

I don't blame VAR for giving it, but the more I see it, the more I think this is another example of the rule being totally unforgiving against, what are clearly "accidental" handballs.

 

 

If you look at, Goldson is shaping to volley the ball clear with his left foot, that's his anticipated body position for the ball's trajectory.

 

But Maeda flicks it on, from about 2 yards away, it deflects the ball from where Goldson expected it to go, and it clips the bone of his elbow, at speed, without any time for him to possibly correct his body position from when the ball changes path.  

 

The officials absolutely should take into consideration if a ball is deflected, distance and speed.  Goldson was hugely unlucky, it shouldn't have been a penalty.

He didn't misjudge it though, it was flicked on a split second before it deflected onto his elbow. He did nothing wrong as wasn't at fault.

The whole discourse of Scottish football right now and referees and VAR and decisions is so fucking tiresome.

Every single game now isn't a game of football it's a 90 minute refereeing review before the ball is even kicked and it's ruining the enjoyment of the game.

Stop desperately looking for anything to whinge about. IMO they got all the big decisions right today, at worst you can say we got the softer one. Just talk about the football

They actually aren't, they are the easiest and clearest rules we've had

Now there's no refs interpretation of accidental or intentional, they dont need to try figure that out,

Looked like he was doing everything he could not to have to header the ball and face a repeat of his OG against Benfica. Was never in the right position to clear it even if the ball had continued on it's original trajectory.

It’s desperately unlucky. He does everything to bring his arm into his body so there is no part away from his body. 

It takes a deflection and then flicks him on the elbow at the only split second where it could be deemed outside his natural silouhette.

If it had been the other way we’d be in for a Rodger’s tirade, Sutton shouting about a conspiracy and weeks of media furore.

Not sure the rules are clear on it at all either.

Sky desperate to make the celtic pen a stonewaller in comparison to ours. Zero comment on the deflection a split second before it hits Goldson’s elbow. Penalty going by the rules but as much as I called him every name under the sun at the time, it’s harsh. This “just head the ball stuff” is pish too. That was clearly his plan before the cross took a nick. There’s no way he can adjust his body in time. Should be said I thought Goldson was howling all game btw.

100% a clear penalty - he even moved his arm slightly towards trajectory of the ball. The rule is wild but it was definitely in line with the handball rules.

That's the key phrase. "In today's game". It was always getting given but it's the rules that are a shambles. That type of incident should never be a penalty.

It's a clear penalty with the current handball rules.

Goldson has made an effort to tuck his arm in, and gets caught out with Maeda's flick. Total accident and tbh, not too much he could do about it as he is already in the air when Maeda flicks it. You need leverage from your arms to jump and he has tried to tuck it in beside him.

The handball rule isn't a good rule. Given we spend a lot of time in opponents boxes we have benefitted more than lost out with the current rule, but...... far to many penalties given for clear accidents and I wish FIFA would come up with something - too often a penalty kick seems far to harsh for a totally accidental infringement.
