Shankland’s a miles better player than people give him credit for. Let’s be honest, most people have only seen play against us, and are basing their view on him on his goal stats. His link up play has massively improved since he signed for Hearts, he drops deep a lot and brings others in really well. He’s much more than just a goalscorer.

I guess it depends on what it is that Clement thinks he has to develop on as to why he hasn't been playing for us. It's easier to chuck young players out wide or at full back because mistakes there are generally more forgiving for the team.  Chucking Rice into an already dysfunctional midfield that has defensive transition problems could be a disaster if its been identified that it is his positioning that he has to work on for example. Even if we loaned him out there are certain qualities that may mean he could find himself not being picked at Championship level if they need to be worked on. Ideally we want young players to make mistakes and learn from them but not to the wider detriment of our results and the players overall confidence. It's a tricky one.
